Handmade Washi Experience Studio

手漉き和紙体験工房
In our studio, we demonstrate traditional Washi papermaking and you can experience making Washi on your own. You can take home the Washi paper you made yourself on the day. Walk-ins welcome depending on availability. When you enter the building, you will see a glass sliding door right in front you. That's the entrance of the studio. Please come in directly without stopping at our shop. 1 session is approximately 1 hour.

Rakusui-Shi: RAKUSUI, or “water dropping” in English, is a traditional washi-making technique that allows us to make washi with different patterns by dropping water from above spraying water with a shower.
We can also use a mold made of water-repellent material with a smooth surface, to create patterns.

Lace Washi: We will use the specially made molds designed by a Japanese Washi artist Tomomi Tamura. Please choose one from the three designs: 1. Circus Elephant 2. “OZ” patterns 3. Dogs and Cats.

You can draw patterns freely on an A4 washi paper using the materials we have in our studio: colored washi paper, Yuzen washi (patterned paper), Tengu-joshi (thin paper), pressed flowers, colored Kozo fibers, and gold/silver leaves. You can also combine different colored washi and/or colored Kozo fibers. You can also bring in your own materials or motifs.
Note: when you bring in your own materials, please choose thin, flat, non-water-repellent materials to finish your paper nicely.
